Day 5 - Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Just finished watching another zombie movie for #undeadOctober. We meant to watch the Dawn of the Dead from 1978, but we couldn't find it streaming. We ended up watching the 2004 version instead. Dawn of the Dead is most well known for being about zombies in a mall which has created a lot of spin off movies, video games, and even board games. When you think of a safe place to hide during a zombie attack, a lot of people think of a mall.

This movie is one of my favorites. I feel like I am saying that about most of the movies, but they each have something I like about them. In this one, I like the dynamics of the people trapped in a mall with lots of time on their hands. Their free time in the mall is actually one of my favorite scenes in a movie in general. Plus watching them call out look alikes in the crowd to shoot is pretty awesome.

Another thing that I like about this movie is that it really gets you to think about what you would do if you were in their situation. In some morbid way, I like to think about what life would be like after the so called "end of the world." Hanging out in a mall doesn't seem like such a bad plan. It is also fun to watch them try to keep it secure and to later create their armored buses. Sure would  be nice to have one of those in the event of a large scale zombie attack wouldn't it?

Well, it is time again for me to review the zombies. These ones are what I would call the classic zombie because so many movies and books use the same template for them. They are created when someone is bit and do not go down until they are shot in the head. They are not much stronger or faster than a normal human, but they have a huge pain tolerance which gives them the upper hand. Overall, I think they create the perfectly suspenseful version of the living dead.

Zombie Summary:
 - Creation: Bit by the infected
 - Origin: Unknown
 - Infection type: Saliva (most likely virus or bacteria)
 - Speed of Zombie: Normal human
 - Destruction: Headshot or removal of the head
 - Causes end of the world: Yes

We had a lot of fun watching that one and we hope it convinces others of you to go out and re-watch it or watch it if you have not seen it yet. We will back with more undead fun tomorrow!
