The Cure - Finished my review pass

It is time for another update about my progress on "The Cure." Over the past month, I have been reviewing the story and making a list of big plot problems that I find. When I started out, I thought this task would be easy. That turned out to be very far from the truth.

The first and main obstacle that I ran into is that I have a really hard time reading my own work. I think that when people say that you are your own worst critic, they are not kidding. I found that when trying to read my story, I got very distracted by small little problems instead of focusing on the issues I was looking for. I would get frustrated at myself for making simple mistakes. After about a week of trying to read it, I had only made it about 4 chapters.

So what did I do? To tell you the truth, I almost just gave up. I have been posting some of the chapter on Wattpad at the same time as I was trying to review it and that didn't do much to help. I felt like my story was not being read by anyone. That coupled with my own negative reviews was bringing me to a complete stop. And seeing how slow I was going, just made it worse.

Right as I was about to just throw my hands up in the air and give up, I came up with an idea. I used a text to speech converter and turned my whole novel into an audio book. It wasn't perfect, but it at least force me to keep going. I would open the book and follow along as the audio played. I found that by doing this, I was forced to focus on bigger issues then simple spelling mistakes. And if I got too far behind writing down a note, then I could just pause it until I caught up again.

This ended up working perfectly and by listening to my book, I found a few problems that I don't think I would have found otherwise. It was like listening to another person's reaction to my sentences even though it was the almost completely monotone voice of a computer. Using this method, I was able to write myself about 300 comments.

The best part about it is that I got to sit back and listen to my whole book. I had not read though it all the way from start to finish yet. Having heard the whole thing, I am seeing a few big issues that I need to fix, but overall, I am still really liking the story. The story was still able to surprise me in a few places which sounds crazy, I know.

My next step is to dive in and start fixing some of the major issues. I think I have about 3 chapters that are getting a total rewrite. Once those are finished, I should be ready for more beta readers. After that, I am going to make a few final tweaks, then it is off to the editors.

If you would like to be a beta reader then leave a comment here or shoot me a message. I will take as much help as I can get so don't be afraid to volunteer.
